Sony today have announced at Gamescom that they will be cutting the price of the PS3 to £199.
That’s a price cut of over £50, and with Christmas just around the corner it’s sure to boost sales of the PS3 which has been struggling as of late to keep up with the Wii and Xbox 360. According to NPD Group’s numbers the Wii had been out in front for a long time but recently the Xbox 360 has taken over the top slot.
In a statement Sony has this to say: “With the breadth and depth of services and content available for the PS3 system, including its impressive BD software line-up and the expansive portfolio of more than 60,000 games and video content available on PlayStation Network, the new price will make the platform more accessible than ever and will appeal to a wider audience looking to buy the best entertainment system for their home.”
The price drop will come as now surprise with Industry experts predicting over the summer that the PS3 would drop below the £200 mark later in the year. Sony will hope the price drop will finally help them to overcome the Wii, with many people saying it’s best years are behind it. They will also hope to gain some ground on the Xbox 360.
It will certainly be interesting to see how Nintendo and Microsoft react. The price of the PS3 has always been something that has left them trailing in the footsteps of the Xbox 360 and Wii, but now with them all on an even playing field it could really be the boost Sony need.
