Sony have officially confirmed that their next generation handheld gaming console will be region-free, meaning gamers will be able to import the handheld gaming console from Japan where it will launch first and import games from all around the world.
President of Sony Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the news on twitter, when asked if it was confirmed if the PS Vita was region-free, he replied “Yes, it is”. This confirmation comes after Sony’s Michael Denny said back in June that to the best of his knowledge it would be region-free.
Yoshida went on to warn people about importing the handheld console from Japan, “There are people who are interested in importing the Japanese version of PS Vita from outside Japan, but I personally do not recommend that, from my experience owning both US and [Japanese] game consoles of everything, there tend to be minor nuisances. Like inconsistency between the use of X and O buttons between system software and games.” He explained, “It’s a legacy, but in Japan circle means “yes”, cross means “no”.”
Last week Sony revealed that the PlayStation Vita would go on sale in Japan on December 17, however will not be released in Europe and the US until early 2012. It is likely that despite the caution many people will choose to import the handheld console in time for Christmas.
