The first ever quad-core tablet was on show at the Microsoft’s BUILD 2011 developers conference in California this week. The Windows 8 tablet, powered by a NVIDIA Kal-El quad-core processor was unfortunately displayed behind a plexiglass cell so that no-one could get their hands on it.
The tablet was only a reference tablet that is unlikely to ever go on sale to the mass market, but it is the NVIDIA Kal-El quad-core processor that the tablet is running on that makes this tablet so special.
Engadget managed to get a picture of the Kal-El tablet but could not find out much more about the tablet apart from the processor is will provide a huge gain in battery life, measured in days, not hours.
The much anticipated NVIDIA Kal-El quad-core processor was first announced back in February, when it was rumored it would be released August/September. We’re now in the middle of September and there is still no word on when a tablet or smartphone powered by the processor will hit the market.
There had been rumors that the tablet would be presented at the conference however that turned out to be a Samsung tablet running on an Intel chip which was presented running Windows 8. Whether or not this was always the plan we’re not sure but there have been some rumors making the rounds that suggest problems with Windows 8 running on the NVIDIA Kal-El powered tablet meant they had to change their plans to present it at the conference.
This rumor is backed up by the fact that NVIDIA unveiled its Windows 8 developer program yesterday, so it seems it’s still a work in progress.
