Following the Nintendo 3DS price cut in August Nintendo have reported an increase in sales by 260% for the handheld console.
Back in July (just 5 months after the Nintendo 3DS was released) Nintendo announced they would be cutting the price of the Nintendo 3DS on 12 August 2011, following disappointing sales figures. The huge price cut knocked almost a third of the price; it was cut by 10,000 Yen in Japan, $80 in North America and £40-50 in the UK.
The price cut seems to have done the trick according to market research firm NPD, with 185,000 units sold following the price cut on 12 August 2001, an increase of more than 260% when compared to the same 19 day period in July.
For those customers who purchased the Nintendo 3DS before the price cut, the Japanese firm will be giving away 20 classic games for free, to download and play on the system to compensate them.
“Consumers are responding very positively to the new suggested retail price of $169.99 for the Nintendo 3DS. With Star Fox 64 3D and the new Flame Red color launching tomorrow, and Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 arriving later this year, Nintendo 3DS will offer consumers cutting-edge entertainment and tremendous value this holiday season,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing in America.
Whether or not Nintendo are sugar coating things with these stats remains to be seen, as NPD stats can be rather flexible at times. However despite that things are looking much more promising for the Nintendo 3DS following this news and perhaps this will be the beginning of better things to come for the 3DS.
