iPhone 5 will support Unicom’s 21Mbps HSPA+ data network

We’re all expecting that Apple will be unveiling their new iPhone 5 at the press event on October 4 but we have some interesting information ahead of the event regarding the connectivity of the device.

China Unicom’s Deputy Director Huang Wenlian was making a presentation at Macworld Asia and stated that the iPhone 5 would make use of their HSPA+ 21Mbps network.

There was no mention of LTE however, which many people were expecting to be supported by the iPhone 5. It’s still unclear whether this is a limitation of the China Unicom network or the iPhone 5, although reports earlier this year said the Chinese carrier was not rolling out a commercial LTE network until 2013. That said support for the carrier’s HSPA+ 21Mbps network is still three times faster than the iPhone 4.
