Tip UsEven though most consumers don’t have their hands on the iPhone 4S quite yet, a few ended up getting extended hands-on time with the device, enough time to perform a little bit of benchmark testing. The consensus? Apple’s new A5-equipped smartphone zips along at 800MHz and has graphics that are just slightly less powerful than its tablet brethren. Overall and unshockingly enough, it’s a faster device than its predecessor and around 25-percent less-powerful than the iPad 2.
Javascript performance on the iPhone 4S is on par with Tegra 2-based Honeycomb devices like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 8.9. The new iPhone also pummels newer Gingerbread smartphones like Motorola’s Droid Bionic and Samsung’s Galaxy S II, as well as HTC’s Thunderbolt running Froyo.
The iPhone 4S does have a lower CPU clock speed than most of today’s and even yesterday’s smartphones, but that simply means higher yields from the factory and lower operating voltages, which translates to better battery life. The iPhone 4S has a clock speed that isn’t too slow, but not too fast as to chew up battery life.
On a similar yet slightly unrelated note, it’s rumored that the iPhone 4S has only 512MB of RAM (just like the iPhone 4) rather than the expected 1GB. This news supposedly comes from an Infinity Blade developer, as well as the website Appvv. Both knew a lot about the hardware specs of the iPhone 4S. However, this will likely not make a huge difference in overall performance and perspective buyers should not be worried.
