HP has parted way with the WebOS phone technology, announcing it has no plans to continue operations with the WebOS devices, more importantly the Touchpad and WebOS phones.
Why the ‘axe’?
Generally if not technically speaking, WebOS devices did win hearts of some die-hard fans, but HP have not been selling them as per expectations.
Picture back 16 months and it all looked promising as HP announced the purchase of Palm phones. Now though it is anything but gloom, as sales continue to die down. Units (that include the Touchpad, Pre series and Veer) have simply not be able to satisfy company’s milestones and financial targets.
What has caused mediocre sales?
The reasons are evident; there were not enough apps for the devices and hence not many interested users. As for the market though, the now four major competitors in iOS, Android, Blackberry and WP7 will continue to battle in an attempt to win disappointed fans.
Can we expect better from HP?
The official statement said that, “HP will continue to explore options to optimize the value of webOS software going forward” does not fill us with confidence for future prospects. It seems obvious that HP has called “quits” on the operating system and turned it’s attention towards the enterprise side of the business.
In the foresight, one option could be that of licensing the “sacked” technology to a third party, but we are yet to hear anything on that.
