Last Monday, Google made an aggressive $12.5 billion bid for Motorola Mobility Holdings, in an attempt to put the heat on rivals Apple in mobile smartphone market.
Google-Motorola co-operation: New innovations and technologies expected in coming days
Known for it’s superior Search engine and Android Operating System; with this take-over, Google has took a step forward in their plan to match rivals such as Apple and gain greater market share. With the purchase of Mobility Holdings, Google has unnerved their rivals, and is almost certain to gain more business in the tablet and smartphone markets over the coming years… and their rivals should be nervous, Google have dominated with their search engine over the years and have already been dominating the smartphone market with their Android OS.
Though the deal is yet to obtain regulatory approval, Google will benefit immensely from the a treasure chest of around 17000 Motorola patents. The interesting part — this not only gives Google a shield against mounting lawsuits, but also adds to its armory for those phone manufacturers already using Android.
Google is going mobile
Google Chief Executive Officer, Larry Page made their intentions clear; they have bought Motorola (who are a dedicated Android partner) so they can improve the competition of their Android OS in the mobile computing market. He pointed that there is huge prospect as of now. Google released this PR statement:
“The acquisition of Motorola Mobility, a dedicated Android partner, will enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and will enhance competition in mobile computing. Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business.”
Though the outcome of the Google-Motorola Mobility merger is still not completely clear we can expect something big is coming in near future. Google may well use Motorola as a stepping to speed up research and development into tablets and smartphones.
The merger will aid Google to curb the dominance of Apple by cutting down prices as they can build the device based around Google products. The deal could also be used to expand Google TV and Android into the living room thanks to Motorola’s relationships with certain carriers.
Android’s rebirth or its demise?
Google made it clear that their co-operation with Android partners like LG, Samsung and HTC will be unaffected; Google appreciates their long time joint effort to promote the Android OS in the smartphone and tablet market and will continue to license Android systems to these long time partners.
Until this point Google have dominated the market with the Android OS mainly because of their partnerships with the aforementioned companies but they have also proven with the Google Nexus they have what it takes to manufacture and sell their own brand of smartphones in a competitive market. So this deal is sure to worry any current Android partners, that Google are set to step up their range of smartphones and tablets; meaning the Android OS could become exclusive to their own products.
Android partners could look elsewhere such as the new Windows Phone 7 OS. Microsoft depend solely on partnerships with phone manufacturers so in the long term would be a more reliable choice for phone manufacturers. On the other hand it may also prompt phone manufacturers to make better hardware so that Google don’t bail on them; so it could really go either way.
So the biggest question is how will Android partners such as LG, Samsung and HTC respond to this news? Let us know on Twitter or leave is a comment below.
