The CyanogenMod team have been working hard behind the scenes on CyanogenMod 7 which will bring a ported version of Google Android Gingerbread to the HP Touchpad.
With HP’s webOS 3.0 being discontinued the team have been working hard to bring a better alternative to the HP Touchpad and what better solution than the popular Android OS. The Android OS has hundreds of thousands of third party apps that can run on Gingerbread, compared with about 6,000 apps for webOS.
They have released a video showing their progress; the latest update adds WiFi, sound and an operational accelerometer to the port. The sound is a bit on the fast side but they say it is still a work in progress. There are also some other applications that don’t work yet such as the Android Youtube app.
Benchmarks have shown that the Android port runs pretty well on the HP Touchpad, so when the final port is released it should run pretty smoothly. There’s no code being released at the moment as they are still working very hard on some problems and adding new features, but for now we can enjoy this video showing of the new features.
