A UK based research firm called Ovum, have predicted that by the end of the year apps downloaded by Android users will surpass that of apps download by iOS users.
Android have never led the app download race, so this will be the first time they take the lead from Apple. Android has seen incredible growth since it was released by Google back in 2008, and today is widely considered the best-selling smartphone platform.
According to the research firm downloads from Android devices will hit 8.1 billion by the end of this year, which will leave iOS apps trailing at 6 billion downloads. This is incredible news for Android considering last year they only saw 1.4 billion downloads.
By 2016, Android is forecast to have 21.8 billion app downloads versus 11.6 billion for the iPhone. However it is not all doom and gloom for Apple as they will still generate more revenue for paid apps. They predict that iPhone paid download revenue will hit $2.86 billion in 2016, compared to $1.5 billion for Android.
Ovum has also predicted the total number of app downloads this year is estimated to be 18 billion by the end of the year, compared to 7.4 billion at the end of 2010.
