Today at the Apple press event Tim Cook unveiled the new iPhone 4S, his first major product announcement as Apple CEO. The announcement of the iPhone 4S was the biggest news of the day, with no word of an iPhone 5.
The iPhone 4S is an exciting step in the right direction for the iPhone though, with a completely redesigned interior the it’s the the most amazing iPhone yet.
The exterior of the iPhone 4S is pretty much identical to its predecessor, so anyone hoping for a completely different looking iPhone will be out of look. It’s what under the hood that has been completely redesigned.
The iPhone 4S is packing an A5 chip, the same chip from the iPad 2. The dual-core processor is up to 2X faster than the previous iPhone 4 CPU and the dual core graphics is up to 7x faster.
The battery life has been greatly improved, over several types of usage shown the battery seemed pretty impressive. The device is expected to get 8 hours of 3G talk time, 6 hours of 3G web browsing, 10 hours of video, or 40 hours of music on a single charge.
The wireless system has been improved so that users can “intelligently switch between antennas for even better call quality.” This allows for fewer dropped calls and a better signal while you’re moving around.
The 4S as expected, has both GSM and CDMA allowing it to be used on both networks. The handset also has “World Phone” status, allowing it to be used on networks around the world.
The iPhone 4S will have an 8-megapixel camera and can shoot in 3264 x 2448 resolution, a 60% boost in resolution from the iPhone 4?s camera.
There’s a new Hybrid IR filter, better white balance, and face detection.
The camera has a back-illuminated CMOS sensor, making it easier to take high-quality photos in low-light situations and takes those photos 1/3 quicker than the iPhone 4. The camera is capable of f/2.4. The camera also has a hybrid IR filter which lends itself to better color accuracy in photos and more color uniformity.
The iPhone 4S camera sports face detection for recognizing faces in your photos and a 26% better white balance for taking more accurate-looking pictures. The camera can take its first picture in just 1.1 seconds, with the second able to follow a mere 0.5 seconds later. Video recording on the handset is 1080p.
Apple counts more than 200 new features in iOS 5. Among them are iMessage, an integrated text messaging service that lets you send text, videos, photos locations and contacts; Notification Center, a reworked notification system that helps you keep track of all app notifications in one place.
Siri voice control brings easy and natural voice control to the iPhone. It will let you use natural language to perform tasks like asking for a weather forecast or getting directions, setting an alarm or making a calendar appointment.
