Apple’s finalized version of its operating system, iOS 5 went live yesterday and it’s a pretty big upgrade. Apple have stated there are more than 200 new features buried in the latest iOS, so we thought you might find this list of 20 handy tips quite useful.
Tip 1: Remove keyboard from Messages
When the keyboard is visable making it hard to see the whole text message simply swipe the message down and the keyboard is hidden.
Tip 2: Custom Vibrations
Choose from 5 different vibration rhythms or customise one. Found at Settings > Sounds > Vibration – you’ll need to turn on custom vibrations first at Settings > General > Accessibility. When you’re finished, you can assign your new custom vibration to a contact when editing it inside the Phone app.
Tip 3: Delete individual items in the Call History
Inside the Phone app, tap on Recents and then swipe left on an entry for the red “Delete” button to pop up. Tap on it, to remove that one item from the list.
Tip 4: Camera from Lock Screen
When in the lock screen you double tap the home button and click on the photo icon. It even loads faster.
Tip 5: Custom Tones
Finally you can edit tones. Like setting custom vibrations, you can also create custom audio tones for message alerts, calendar notifications, tweets, reminders and ringtones. Edit the tones at Settings > Sounds. There’s also a “Tone Store” via the iTunes Music app.
Tip 6: Text expansion
This new feature text expansion (or Shortcuts, as Apple calls it) allows you to type a phrase such as “brb” and it will auto-expand to “be right back.” You can set-up your own Shortcuts in Settings > General > Keyboard and click on the button labeled “Add New Shortcut…”
Tip 7: Reminders
There is a fantastic new Reminders app for the iPhone, you can set it to remind you at a certain time or at a certain location. The app is location aware, for example when you pass by the grocery store, the app will tell you that you need to buy milk.
Tip 8: Notifications
Swipe down from the top to view notifications. See emails, Facebook messages, Texts and much more. Notifications are by far the best part of iOS 5.
Tip 9: Twitter everywhere
iOS 5 will have Twitter integration everywhere. Apps like camera will be able to directly post the image to Twitter. Sign in via Settings > Twitter and give it a try.
Tip 10: WiFi Sync
