Apple has released the fifth pre-release beta version of their upcoming iOS 5 operating system.
Presently aimed at developers-only, the beta gives a glimpse of some interesting features – though it contains some bugs.
Well, Apple has offered this latest beta for developers to work on the apps and much more, which can be wirelessly downloaded to any of the iOS devices. The beta does offer some exciting features, some of which are yet to be perfected.
Feature-rich iOS 5th beta: Speech-to-text and much more
This iOS beta offers a unique speech to text feature prebuilt into the keyboard. According to information released, Apple is using a voice Recognition Technology from Nuance, a Massachusetts based Software Company. Earlier also, there was leaked news and screenshots, showing “Nuance Diction” controls available on iOS 5.
This raw beta version includes an icon of a microphone placed just beside the space bar, which on clicking opens up page with the speech to text icon. The interesting part – the page stays on the screen as long as the user is talking, and he stops the screen reverts back to the original keyboard page; with a text box displaying the spoken words.
Also, there’s a hearing-aid option in the settings option. Toggling on-off from the settings -> accessibility option, the hearing aids could be optimized for superior performance, but this may come at a cost of distorted 2G coverage.
iOS beta: Bugs still there; but Apple working on perfection
This is expected for a beta release – bugs are there. There’s a problem with the volume sliders-buttons, even when the volume buttons are pressed, the sliders doesn’t get updated. Also, there’s some problem with the iTunes and iMessage – it’s not reliably working on the iOS 5 updated versions. iMessage with facebook and twitter integrated, is one of the most talked-about item for the iOS 5, drawing parallel with peer RIM’s BlackBerry Messenger.
Apple has suggested developers to back-up all data, content and photos before going for the beta update to negate any chance of data loss while restoring from back-up.
